Dear Reader,
I want to share some good news with you about the Indian Supreme Court
case concerning the denial of affirmative action benefits to thousands
of Christian Dalits ("Untouchables") in India. If a recent committee
report is followed, the Dalits may find legal freedom at last.
On May 15, the National Commission for Religious & Linguistic
Minorities presented its long-awaited report to the government. The report
suggests that the law denying these benefits to Dalit Christians and
Muslims should be changed.
If the government chooses to follow the Commission's recommendations,
thousands of Dalit Christians will receive the same civil rights as
their counterparts who choose to remain in the country's majority Hindu,
Buddhist and Sikh faiths. Read more about this developing case here:
